Tastemakers

In a seminar, we were asked to come up with 4 people who we believe are tastemakers of the 21st century, who have an impact on the way we dress, and style ourselves whether we are aware of this or not. These were my 4/5 picks for you to take a look at.

Tavi Gevinson:
This 14 year old american fashion blogger, described herself as 'a tiny dork that sits inside all day wearing awkward jackets and pretty hats', however this is unlikely to be the case now. She began her blog the infamous 'Style Rookie' in 2008, when she was just 11, completly unaware of the success that would be soon to follow. An interesting fact about Tavi is that her parents were completly unaware that she even had a blog, or even knew what one was for that matter, until she asked for their permission to appear in a New York Times magazine story. Her blog has well over 4 million readers all over the world, and she is described as being at the frontline of fashion, her opinion influences thousands of peoples views on fashion and style. She has since been the inspiration for Rodarte's collection for Target and is seen front row at an array of New York Fashion Week shows.

Michelle Obama:
Michelle has a classic and confident look, which has lead her to being titled 'the first lady of fashion'. The presidents wife, is constantly gaining recognition for her smart structured style, she has been voted among the '10 best dressed people' according to Vanity Fair magazine. She often wears clothes by designers such as Oscar De La Renta, Narciso Rodriguez and Calvin Klein. She shakes of the traditonal, unfashionale tweed twinset and pearls image, with beautiful white, one-shouldered Jason Wu. In March 2009 she was on the cover of US Vogue, the first lady since Hilary Clinton. She is becoming the nations sweetheart for America's fashion, much as Princess Diana was to the UK.

Lara Stone:
The supermodel, with the unusual trademarks of size 7 feet (compared to the average model 8-10) and of course gap teeth. There have recently been a rise in gap teethed models, or at least coverage about them, these include Georgia May Jagger, Lindsey Wixon and Ashley Smith. This look even inspired Tyra Banks to have a contestant on America's Next Top Models, tooth gap widened! Lara was claimed by W maagazine in 2010 to be 'the most-wanted face of the moment' she has featured in many advertisements for brands such as Topshop, Prada, DKNY, Jean Paul Gaultier, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton etc, as well as gracing numerous magazine covers and fashion shows, she is having the ulimate exposure in the spotlight at the moment.

Katie 'Jordan' Price:
We were asked to present tastemakers, people who we felt influenced fashion and peoples perceptions nowadays, never said they had to be good tastemakers. Katie Price, or 'Jordan' as she is referred to, begun her career by modelling on top of Jordan formula 1 racing cars, at just 16, but it skyrocketed at 18, when she had a boob job and landed various glamour modelling contracts although she was soon dropped from page three for not being natural. She has now written five adult novels, four autobiographies, two childrens books and branched into fashion with a equstrian line, childrenswear, fragrances, haircare, tanning and eyelash ranges. She is famous for wearing next to nothing, or juicy couture tracksuits, von dutch hats, the overuse of the burberry check, all of which these fads have been followed by her fans, and will continue to make her a tastemaker of the moment, whether we like it or not.
